Arkansas City issued the following announcement on Nov. 2.

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) will close South Summit Street/U.S. 166 at the railroad crossing just north of KanPak starting Monday, Nov. 1.

This closure of all four lanes so BNSF can make needed repairs to the crossing is expected to last for at least one week. Traffic control will be in place to divert all highway traffic away from this closure.

Eastbound traffic on West Madison Avenue/U.S. 166 will be diverted north onto Summit Street all of the way through Arkansas City, then back to the east on the U.S. 77 bypass north of the City limits. U.S. 166 traffic will be able to rejoin the normal highway route at the U.S.77-U.S. 166 roundabout. This detour will be identical, but in reverse, for westbound traffic on U.S. 166 at the roundabout.

Detoured highway traffic is strongly encouraged not to continue east on Madison Avenue, as some semis can become stuck in the underpass, or to divert east onto Kansas Avenue, due to school traffic. New U.S. 166 detour signage will be posted at these locations and all local laws will be enforced.

Local traffic south of the railroad crossing on South Summit Street still will be able to access the U.S. 77 bypass from the intersection just south of KanPak. Local traffic north of the railroad crossing still will be able to access North Summit Street northbound back to the Madison Avenue intersection.
