University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff issued the following announcement on Feb. 18.
Dr. Jane Andayi Opiri has been appointed as an assistant professor for the Department of Human Sciences at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB). With a focus in merchandising and design, she will teach courses in the department and recruit and advise students.
As an assistant professor, Dr. Opiri will also be responsible for conducting research, developing collaborative relationships with business and industry and participating in scholarly, creative activities. She will seek external funding and perform university and community service.
“I am excited to have Dr. Opiri join our family,” Dr. Brenda Martin, chair of the Department of Human Sciences, said. “Her work experience with apparel design and clothing preference will play a vital role in growing our merchandising program.”
Dr. Opiri joins the UAPB School of Agriculture, Fisheries and Human Sciences after having served as an assistant professor at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. There, she taught courses in textiles and clothing, fashion merchandising and clothing construction.
From 2016 to 2018, she was an instructor at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, Louisiana. In this role, in addition to teaching courses on fashion, apparel and textiles and advising students, she served on the university’s study abroad committee. In this capacity, she developed an education abroad program in Italy for students of communications and family and consumer sciences.
She worked as a teacher of family and consumer sciences at Tara High School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana from 2018 to 2019. Earlier in her career, she was the department head (guidance and counseling) for the Teachers Service Commission, St. Christopher’s High School in Kitale, Kenya. Prior to that, she was a teacher of family and consumer sciences at the same high school.
Dr. Opiri earned a doctoral degree in textiles, apparel design and merchandising and a master’s degree in human ecology-textiles and apparel merchandising from Louisiana State University (LSU) in Baton Rouge. She also served as an instructor of record at LSU during her studies. She received her bachelor’s degree in home economics from Kenyatta University in Nairobi, Kenya.
She has published manuscripts and abstracts on topics relating to fashion, apparel and textiles. Some of her current projects include research on the clothing preferences and collaborative-designed, customized ethnic dressof African immigrant women in the U.S., as well as the consumption of luxury fashion brands among millennial college students.
Dr. Opiri’s professional memberships include the International Textiles and Apparel Association, American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences and the Honor Society of Agriculture-Gamma Sigma Delta.
