The Arkansas-Pine Bluff Lady Lions secured a 66-61 victory over Alcorn State on Thursday night at the Davey L. Whitney Health & Physical Education Complex in Lorman, Mississippi. This win brings their overall record to 13-15 and improves their Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) record to 10-8.
Indiya Bowen led the Lady Lions with a game-high 26 points, shooting 7-of-17 from the field, including five three-pointers and seven free throws. She also contributed four assists and four steals. Bowen gave Arkansas-Pine Bluff its first lead of the game with an early three-pointer and helped extend the advantage with consecutive threes in the second quarter.
Khaniah Gardner added 13 points on perfect shooting, making all six of her attempts. She also collected 13 rebounds, four of them offensive, and recorded a steal. Jailah Pelly contributed 15 points on 7-of-16 shooting along with seven rebounds and four steals.
The trio of Bowen, Gardner, and Pelly combined for 54 of the team’s total points.
Arkansas-Pine Bluff established control early in the game, leading 18-6 after the first quarter and holding a 33-25 edge at halftime. They increased their lead to as many as 14 points during the third quarter before entering the final period ahead by ten.
Alcorn State narrowed the gap late in the fourth quarter, reducing UAPB’s lead to four points with just over a minute left. Bowen responded by making two free throws with 21 seconds remaining to push the margin back to six points and added another free throw at the buzzer for the final score.
Jasmine Davis contributed two points, four assists, and two steals for UAPB. The team finished with a total of 12 steals and forced Alcorn State into 15 turnovers, converting those opportunities into 15 points off turnovers.
After this result, Arkansas-Pine Bluff continues its SWAC campaign looking to build on its recent success.
